Infrared

Connectivity as the name suggests connects to different devices through infrared. This is achieved by pairing the device in line of sight with other infrared device. Disadvantage is that connectivity distance is very short, data transfer speed is mediocre and the paired devices have to be in line-of-sight for connectivity to be successful.

Bluetooth

Connectivity is another form of connectivity that talks to other Bluetooth devices through radio frequency. Unlike infrared, Bluetooth does not have to be in line of sight to pair with other Bluetooth device. Named after former European king, Bluetooth is finding it's way in all the upcoming mobile phones, PDA's, laptops and desktops.

Data transfer is very fast in Bluetooth. Depending on the device, the range of Bluetooth can be as far as 100 meters. Nokia 6230 can achieve Bluetooth connectivity to as long as 10 meters.

The Bluetooth device can search for other Bluetooth devices and send data (files, notes, reminders, etc). This is also termed as "Toothing" or "Blue Jacking".

GPRS is used for wireless connection to internet. Almost every thing can be surfed from mobile that can be surfed from desktops. Nokia 6230 understands web pages of "wml" format.

POP-PORT is used to connect mobile to stereo headset or pc through DKU-2 cable.

Nokia PC suite is bundled along with the handset for synchronization, backups and data transfers.

THE POWER OF EDGE

Nokia 6230 was the first handset to be introduced in India with EDGE technology. I use Bluetooth adaptor to connect my handset with my desktop PC. You can also connect through infrared or DKU-2 cable. Initially my cellular provider provided regular GPRS speed of 24-36 Kbps. Though convenient, it was still better off that time to surf net through dial up modem. Normal download speeds would come out to 1-2 kbps and web pages took time to download. Even then, surfing speed was far better than Nokia 6600 both from mobile phone and through desktop. Then EDGE technology was introduced. Difference was phenomenal. Minimum download speeds at peak traffic hours were 9 Kbps and maximum went up till 15 Kbps. Web pages now download in a flash.
